The Empirical Labs Fatso EL7x has been designed to counter exactly that, putting a fully analogue tape simulator and optimiser at your disposal, complete with knee-compression. Feed this machine anything and it'll feel like it just came out of a high-end analogue studio. The controls aren't just tactile, but as simple and intuitive as the interface of most of your plugins. Meanwhile the built-in compressor is brand new and based on the Urei 1176LN, so in the slowest attack mode, it supports a 20:1 ratio, giving you soft compression of just a few decibels whenever needed.
